Impaired antioxidant defenses and DNA damage in the European glass eel (Anguilla anguilla) exposed to ocean warming and acidification

چکیده
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has attracted scientific inquiry for centuries due to its singular biological traits. Within the Union, glass fisheries have declined sharply since 1980, from up 2000 t (t) 62.2 in 2018, placing wild populations under higher risk of extinction. Among major causes eels collapse, climate change become a growing worldwide issue, specifically ocean warming and acidification, but, our knowledge, data on physiological biochemical responses these stressors is limited. this context, we selected some representative biomarkers [e.g. glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), heat shock proteins (HSP70), ubiquitin (Ub) DNA damage] study distinct laboratory-climate scenarios, such as increased water temperature (+ 4 °C) pH reduction (? 0.4 units), 12 weeks. Overall, enzymatic machinery was impaired, both muscle viscera, manifested by significant changes CAT, GPx TAC. Heat response varied differently between tissues, increasing with muscle, but not decreasing tissues acidification. inability HSP maintain functional protein conformation responsible boosting production Ub, particularly sole stressors. overproduction reactive oxygen species (ROS), either elicited - metabolic demand or acidification through H+ interaction O2?, generating H2O2 overwhelmed defense mechanisms, causing oxidative stress consequently leading damage. Our results emphasize vulnerability eels' early life stages change, potential cascading consequences adult stocks.

متن کاملGenetic patchiness among recruits in the European eel Anguilla anguilla
Heterogeneity in genetic composition among recruits of marine species is mostly due to a large variance in reproductive success mediated by oceanographic processes. Temporal genetic variation in a population of the European eel was quantified over 2 time scales among glass eel (1) interannual samples (cohorts), and (2) intra-annual samples within cohorts (‘arrival waves’). A total of 789 glass ...
متن کاملDiet-induced phenotypic plasticity in European eel (Anguilla anguilla).
Two phenotypes are present within the European eel population: broad-heads and narrow-heads. The expression of these phenotypes has been linked to several factors, such as diet and differential growth. The exact factors causing this dimorphism, however, are still unknown. In this study, we performed a feeding experiment on glass eels from the moment they start to feed. Eels were either fed a ha...

متن کاملTolerance of chronic hypercapnia by the European eel Anguilla anguilla.
European eels were exposed for 6 weeks to water CO(2) partial pressures (P(CO)(2)) from ambient (approx. 0.8 mmHg), through 15+/-1 mmHg and 30+/-1 mmHg to 45+/-1 mmHg in water with a total hardness of 240 mg l(-1) as CaCO(3), pH 8.2, at 23+/-1 degrees C. Arterial plasma P(CO)(2) equilibrated at approximately 2 mmHg above water P(CO)(2) in all groups, and plasma bicarbonate accumulated up to 72 ...
